Preparing Your Quilt Top for Longarm Quilting

Many of my new customers express concern when dropping off their quilt tops for the first time; they feel that their piecing is not perfect and are worried that I might judge their work. I want my customers to trust that I respect the time and hard work they have put into their quilts and that I do not look upon any imperfections judgmentally. I am always looking for new tricks to improve my own quilting so I would like to offer the following rules of thumb to help you as you prepare your quilt top for longarm quilting.

  1. Backing and batting should both be at least 8” wider and longer than the quilt top (4 inch “margins” all the way around).

  2. Make sure your quilt top is well pressed and seams are flattened.

  3. Trim all hanging threads as much as you can.

  4. If there is fullness in the center or wavy borders, you may wind up with pleats or puckers. I do my best to correct such problems as I quilt, however, I can’t guaranteed that I can work out all fullness. To avoid wavy borders, measure through the middle of your quilt and cut the borders to that length. You may need to ease the quilt to fit the borders.

  5. Identify the top of your quilt and backing with a safety pin if they have a directional print.

  6. Please press the backing fabric.

  7. Please do not baste the quilt top, batting and backing together. I need all three layers separated so I can attach them individually to the frame.

Shipping Your Quilt Top

  1. Place your quilt top, backing, etc. in a zippered plastic bag to protect the materials if the box gets wet during shipping.

  2. Please do not ship your quilt top until you have reserved time for quilting with Erin. As a reminder, I will need a 50% deposit before I can reserve your quilt’s time on the frame.
